Morning Memo/Saturday: I-90 delays… gun violence… WSU fire…

Weather: Sunny today, with a high near 72, according to the National Weather Service. Get outside because tomorrow and Monday likely will  be cooler and cloudy. The National Weather Service forecast.

Traffic: Drivers should expect delays this weekend on I-90 between Cle Elum and Easton and between Hyak and Keechelus Dam. The map and cams.

Rise in gun violence: The Madrona father who was fatally shot when a stranger opened fired Thursday is the second Seattle resident in five weeks to be killed in a random shooting. In April, a 21-year-old woman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pioneer Square. Thursday’s random shooting became the city’s 15th homicide this year, compared to 21 all of last year.

WSU arson? A suspicious fire destroyed a two-story building on the Washington State University campus in Pullman early Saturday. No injuries were reported. The fire is the second on campus in less than a week. A Tuesday fire, which investigators are also calling suspicious, destroyed another community building owned by WSU.

Developer vs. neighbors: Kirkland residents are up in arms after a developer proposed a four-story building with up to 143 apartments or condos on a property just south of downtown Kirkland. Supporters, including the Kirkland mayor, like the idea of high-density housing near the downtown core, while others protest zoning that allows “unlimited residential density” and increased congestion.

Hutch School teacher Melissa Walsh leads her students in dancing during Friday's opening of the Northwest Folklife Festival.

Folklife Festival: Folklife, which opened yesterday, continues 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Seattle Center. See highlights of the festival here. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, check out our list of weekend activities far, far from the Center grounds.
