Seattle’s big July 4th fireworks show looking for more sponsors

The organizer of Seattle’s annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Gas Works Park on Lake Union is asking for donations.

Starbucks is the event’s main sponsor, with Microsoft and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce as major sponsors, according to event organizer One Reel. But One Reel is looking for more sponsors and donations from  individuals.

“The event is happening now, but we’re open to more sponsorship,” said Kate Jackson, spokeswoman for Grandstand Media, out of Los Angeles, “Individuals can also donate.”

Jackson declined to say how much money is needed to pay for this year’s show.

The Family Fourth show was almost canceled two years ago when One Reel announced that it couldn’t find a title sponsor. Radio host Dave Ross and restaurateur  Tom Douglas launched a radio campaign. Pledges totaled $503,000, with $6,000 in funds from Ross and Douglas themselves. The amount was enough to pay for the 2010 fireworks show.

Last year, some 350 companies and private donors contributed to the $500,000 needed to put on the show. Starbucks and Microsoft were the lead sponsors for last year’s show.

The Family Fourth Web site is asking for additional event sponsors and tax-deductible donations to go toward paying for the event. One the site, event organizers also advertise for volunteers to help run the event.
