Why Seattle schools are being dismissed on time

Although eight Seattle schools were in lockdown, or some form of lockdown, for several hours around lunchtime today,  Seattle school offiicials made the decision to let students out of school at their regular dismissal time because Seattle Police believed the neighborhoods were safe, said district spokeswoman Teresa Wippel.

“In their opinion, it was safe for us to release the kids,” Wippel said. She said the district works closely with the police department to make a determination of safety.

There’s only one place where students can’t go — it’s a 5-block area around the first shooting, at the Racer Cafe near Roosevelt High School. Wippel said no one is being allowed to go in that area, which is cordoned off.
