UPDATE: 3 teens burned in Alki Beach bonfire to be discharged

UPDATE: 5:05 p.m. | The Seattle Fire Department says firefighters and medics treated five burn victims after Monday night’s bonfire explosion on Alki Beach. One of the injured teens had poured a flammable liquid into a barbecue pit, causing the explosion.

When firefighters arrived they found two teen boys with second- and third-degree burns to their faces and arms. Two other teens, a boy and a girl, each suffered first- and second-degree burns to their upper chests. A second girl suffered burns to her hair and face.

Three of the four teenagers burned in a bonfire at Alki Beach Monday night are being released from a Seattle hospital.

Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg says they were being released Tuesday afternoon, while the fourth, a male, remained in satisfactory condition.

The three males and one female — all 18 years old — were admitted Monday with burns suffered after one of them poured gasoline on the fire at Alki Beach Park. A fifth male was treated but not admitted to the hospital.

Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore says the teens were burning school papers in a fire pit.

The teens are students at Auburn’s Thomas Jefferson High School, according to Times news partner KING-TV.
