Man tries, fails to enter guilty plea in sex-offender slayings

The Associated Press

PORT ANGELES – A Washington man charged with aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of two convicted sex offenders has been prevented from pleading guilty — although he tried.

The Peninsula Daily News reports  that Patrick Drum told Clallam County Superior Court Judge Ken Williams on Wednesday that he didn’t need the court. In Drum’s words, “I want to plead guilty.”

The judge told Drum that under state law, he can’t accept that plea right now. The judge noted the county prosecutor has said she’s considering whether to seek the death penalty. She has another 30 days to make that decision.

Gary Lee Blanton Jr. and Jerry W. Ray were killed in separate shootings earlier this month. The county sheriff has said a signed note Drum left in a rental car said he hated sex offenders and “it had to be done.”
