Couple attacks off-duty Renton cop at traffic dispute

A 10-year veteran of the Renton Police Department was knocked to the ground and beaten after  he stopped at the scene of a traffic dispute last Friday, Renton police said Tuesday.

Charges are expected to be filed Wednesday against the 33-year-old man and his 31-year-old wife, both from Seattle, who attacked the officer, police said.

The 37-year-old officer, not named by the department, was off duty at the time of the incident, but showed his police badge before he was attacked by a man and woman from one of the vehicles involved.

According to a police news release, the incident occurred just before 1:30 p.m. at the interchange of Interstate 405 at Highway 167.

The off-duty officer saw a white Mercedes that was merging onto 167 almost hit a Toyota. The Mercedes then stopped in a way that and blocked all eastbound vehicles at the spot, including the Toyota.

The officer got out of his vehicle, identified himself as a police officer and approached the male driver and female passenger from the Mercedes.  They then punched him, knocked him to the ground and continued to strike, choke and kick him, police said.

The suspects fled, but were arrested later in the day.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for facial lacerations, sore ribs, and multiple contusions.
