Smaller Ballard Lock damaged by party boat to be closed for 2 weeks

The smaller lock at Chittenden Locks will close for about two weeks as engineers repair about $10,000-20,000 of damage caused by a 60-foot boat that crashed into a walkway over the lock gate on Sunday, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

After inspection today, engineers found that the gates are functioning as designed but the walkway will need to be fixed. Until then, only police and other emergency response vehicles will be allowed to use the smaller lock.

Pedestrians can use the east gate walkway but won’t be able to cross using the west gates until the railing is replaced in about a month.

A boat called the Spirit of 76, a “party venue” according to its website, hit the gate about 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Bill Dowell, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“The captain reported a malfunction and could not put it in reverse,” Dowell said.

Staff at the locks were able to clear visitors prior to the impact.
