Lake Union boat fire sparked by cooking oil

Seattle fire investigators say a boat fire on Lake Union Saturday night was caused by cooking oil that ignited and spread through the cabin of the 40-foot vessel.

The owner, who lives aboard the craft, said the wake from a speeding boat caused the oil to spill from the pan she was using. The woman was not hurt, and is being assisted by the Red Cross. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

During the fire, the Seattle Harbor Patrol towed the boat from the marina where it was moored into the open lake to prevent the flames from spreading. Seattle Fireboat Engine One and firefighters on shore extinguished the blaze.
