Mohawks, warty pigs and a free pass to the zoo

OK, at first we thought they might be kidding…

If you show up at the Woodland Park Zoo with a Mohawk hair cut Sunday, Father’s Day, you get in free.

What’s more, even if you don’t have a Mohawk, stylists from Rudy’s Barbershop will be on hand between 10 a.m. and noon to give you either a Mohawk or buzz cut. Get a cut from Rudy’s people and it, too, generates a free pass to the zoo.

Mohawk Day is in honor of the zoo’s newly arrived and endangered Visayan warty pigs, who, you might have guessed, have head tufts that will sorta pass as Mohawks. (See photo.)

The haircuts for  humans are on a first-come, first-served basis.

People assisting the hair stylists include Caspar Babypants, aka Chris Ballew, the lead singer and songwriter for The Presidents of the United States of America; Sheri Hauser, local arts diva and proprietor of Tasty Delectable Collectibles in Seattle’s Phinneywood neighborhood; and Martin Ramirez, a mammal curator at the zoo and an expert on warty pigs, according to the zoo.

If your garden variety pig says oink, oink, what noise does a punk rock warty pig make?
