Morning Memo/Friday: Mount Rainier tragedy … Dogs at work … Arson sentencing today

Weather: With sunshine and a high of 71 degrees  yesterday, the clouds and high of 67 today just aren’t going to cut it.  And don’t even talk about tomorrow: rain and a high of just 63.  Well, at least it’s not expected to rain Sunday. Did we mention that yesterday was nice? No? Well, yesterday was very nice. The National Weather Service forecast.

Traffic: Be prepared for some traffic issues tomorrow, not the least of which will be brought to you by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.  The map and cams.

Sentencing today in UW horticulture arson case: Briana Waters, the last defendant awaiting sentencing in the 2001 arson that destroyed the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture, is expected to be sentenced today, for a second time. She was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison in 2008, but she was given a new trial on appeal. She later pleaded guilty and today’s sentencing stems from that plea.

Tragedy on Mount Rainier: We will be following the story on the Mount Rainier ranger who died on the mountain during the rescue of four climbers yesterday. The 34-year-old ranger, Nick Hall, fell 3,700 while preparing the climbers for a helicopter evacuation. One of the climbers remained on the mountain overnight to wait out bad weather.

Teen drowns in Lake Tapps: A 16-year-old boy was swimming with family and friends yesterday when he went under the water. Rescuers pulled him out and performed CPR to no avail, according to KOMO radio.

Today is Take your Dog to Work Day, sponsored by Pet Sitters International. So if the boss says it’s OK to bring bowser to the office or wherever you’re slaving away, have at it. No dogs allowed here at the newspaper, but there are plenty of them to see in the South Lake Union neighborhood, what with all the Amazonians walking their pups to the office each day. If you’d like to share photos of you and your pooch at work in our gallery, we encourage you to send them in so we can display them on our pets blog.  There’s a post on the blog that tells you how to do just that. Give it a shot!
