Officials investigating Salmon Bay diesel spill

The cause of a diesel spill that created a sheen up to 600 yards long on Salmon Bay Saturday morning remains unknown.

It is unknown how much fuel was spilled, but one estimate suggested it could have been as little as 10 to 15 gallons, Coast Guard spokesman Nathan Bradshaw said.

Investigators from the Coast Guard, state Department of Ecology and Seattle Police Department Harbor Patrol were investigating the spill, which was spotted around 5 a.m. between Fishermen’s Terminal and Sagstad Marina. It did not reach either shore.

The diesel slick was too thin to be removed, and the rain and wind were dissipating it, Coast Guard and Ecology reported.
