UPDATE: Man found dead in apartment after standoff in Bellevue

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m. | A standoff with a man at a Bellevue apartment ended this morning when police found the man dead in the basement, according to police.

Details, including how he died, weren’t immediately available.

Police had responded to the apartment about 5:15 a.m. on a report that the 39-year-old man inside was threatening suicide.

The man apparently had gone to an ex-girlfriend’s house in Medina before the 911 call and was upset when he left, said Bellevue police spokeswoman Carla Iafrate.

After “causing a disturbance” in Medina, the man returned home and started texting his ex-girlfriend.

Iafrate said officers had been dispatched to other suicide threats involving the man.

“He’s a known subject to us,” Iafrate said.  “Normally it gets resolved peacefully.”

A SWAT team was called, and police negotiators, as well as the man’s brother, were at the scene, attempting to get the man outside safely, Iafrate said.

Police shut down 100th Avenue Northeast between Northeast Fourth Street and Northeast Eighth Street near Bellevue Square for safety reasons. The  apartment is in the 500 block of 100th Avenue Northeast.
