Rally for proposed Seattle sports arena set for this afternoon

People pushing for a sports arena in Seattle’s Sodo neighborhood have scheduled a rally at Occidental Park for 4 p.m. today.

Organizers, who want to bring an NBA team back to the city, say they expect thousands of fans of Seattle’s former NBA team, the SuperSonics, to show up to support their cause.

Hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen has proposed building a new $490 million entertainment venue south of downtown.

Among those expected at today’s event are former Sonics  Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton,  Slick Watts and Detlef Schrempf.

Traffic near and around Occidental Park, which is located at South Main Street and Occidental Avenue South, could be tied up during the afternoon commute.
