Body of missing diver recovered off Bainbridge Island

The body of  a 24-year-old diver who went missing Tuesday was recovered off of Bainbridge Island this afternoon, according to the Bainbridge Island Police.

The diver, David Scheinost of Puyallup, was taking water samples near Restoration Point with a Department of Natural Resources team when his colleagues noticed him struggling at the water surface, the police department’s release said. Before the other divers could reach him, he submerged. Rescuers from several agencies spent hours trying to find his body Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday without luck.

A submersible, owned by Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, eventually located the body, according to Bainbridge police. Pierce County marine officers will continue assisting the Bainbridge Police Department with an ongoing investigation of Scheinost’s death.
