Fire near Chelan continues to burn

A 600-acre wildfire eight miles north of Entiat, Chelan County, continued to burn slowly to the south and east Saturday amid hot and dry weather conditions, the U.S. Forest Service reported.

Earlier Saturday the Forest Service said the fire was about 75 percent contained, but that estimate was being re-evaluated as the fire expanded.

The Navarre fire was first reported Thursday and is burning in grass, brush and pockets of trees.

One home has been evacuated in the Johnson Creek area and 13 others are under a Level 2 evacuation notice, meaning any residents must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

The Forest Service has called for more fire-fighting help, including two additional helicopters, two more 20-person crews to dig fire lines around structures, an air tanker and other equipment and personnel.

About 160 crew members are fighting the fire.

All campground and recreation areas near Chelan are open. The Forest Service cautions motorists traveling along State Route 97A to watch for fire-suppression helicopters dipping water from the Columbia River.
