Morning Memo/Thursday: South Seattle shooting … motorcycle fatalities … July 4 cleanup

Weather: It’s full sun ahead. Light wind today, with a high in the 70s. Summer usually starts the day after July 4, but arrived a day early this year. The National Weather Service forecast

Driver shot in South Seattle: A driver was shot early Thursday after he ignored a group trying to flag him down to street-race, according to KING5. The group began following him in two cars, and a passenger in one car began firing. The driver was wounded in his upper thigh, and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. We’ll be posting updates here.

Motorcycle accidents: A motorcyclist was killed in Pierce County after colliding with a minivan near a fireworks stand. Just before the accident, the motorcyclist was doing wheelies at high speed. The Associated Press identified the motorcyclist as 31-year-old Eric Markle of Tacoma.

Another motorcyclist died Wednesday after running off the highway in Everett. The Edmonds man was 26 years old.

After July 4: Cleanup is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon today. The Gas Works check-in location is full, but volunteers are encouraged to check in at the Center for Wooden Boats at South Lake Union. Trail closed by goats: Olympic National Forest has closed the Mount Ellinor Trail for two weeks because of aggressive mountain goats. Wildlife biologist Kurt Aluzas says the goats may be on the trails because of this year’s deep snow pack.
