Seattle doctor still missing on or near Mount Adams

Dr. Peter Baciewicz (The Polyclinic)

Search crews are still looking for a 55-year-old Seattle doctor who went missing on or near Mount Adams Sunday night, but a text from him this morning has increased their hopes for finding him, said Lt. Brian Winter of the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

Winter said it isn’t known exactly when Dr. Peter Baciewicz — a cardiologist at Polyclinic —¬†wrote the text message, but the fact that it was received by a friend early Tuesday morning may indicate he was hiking through an area with better cellphone reception. The missing hiker is likely within the treeline at the base of the mountain where there’s access to water and better temperatures, he said.

The Polyclinic has identified Baciewicz as the missing man on its website.

“Water is the big thing he needs,” Winter said. “Not having food is an annoyance but not a killer.”

Finding the man from the air while he’s surrounded by trees is difficult, he said. For that reason, Winter said, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t called for helicopter support yet. However family and friends who came to join the search are looking into renting a helicopter search crews can use to find him.

The Seattle man was last seen Sunday morning when his hiking partner left to reach a higher summit, according to The Yakima Herald.
