Tacoma middle-school teacher charged with child rape

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a Tacoma middle school teacher with five counts of child rape alleging she had sex with a student at school and elsewhere, according to The News Tribune.

Keshia T. Shaw, a science and math teacher at Gray Middle School,  allegedly first had sex with the boy after school five years ago in a room next to the classroom, the paper reported. Later on, the victim said, Shaw had sex with him in his bedroom while his mother was at work and in a bank parking lot where she paid him $80 for a sex act.

Tacoma Public Schools spokesman Dan Voelpel told The News Tribune on Monday that the district learned of the accusations May 7 and immediately placed Shaw on paid leave.

Prosecutor Mark Lindquist told the paper the victim decided to come forth about the relationship after a church sermon urged victims of sexual abuse to disclose it because “the truth will set you free.”

Shaw, who was charged on June 26, hasn’t yet entered a plea. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 10.
