The owner of the Kalakala, who says the state has stifled his plans to restore the crumbling old ferry and caused him mental anguish, is suing the state of Washington  and the man who has provided free moorage for the boat for the past eight years, according to a story in The News Tribune in Tacoma.

In taking aim at the state and Karl Anderson, the Tacoma businessman who has provided the moorage, Steve Rodrigues is seeking a jury trial and more than $250 million in various costs and damages, according to The News Tribune story.

Rodrigues’ efforts to raise money for the restoration have been difficult over the years.

The historic, 1935 ferry has been deteriorating on Tacoma’s Hylebos Waterway for eight years and the Coast Guard has repeatedly warned Rodrigues that something needed to be done to keep the vessel from sinking to prevent, among other things, a navigation hazard. Just recently, the boat was moved to another nearby moorage provided by another private owner, but even that moorage is temporary.
