Thunderstorms and lightning roll through the area overnight

Thunder and lightning paid a visit to the Seattle area last night, rumbling some neighborhoods and lighting up the skies.

The same weather system also caused lightning strikes that burned two homes in Yakima County.

The storms capped a clear day in Western Washington when temperatures reached into the 80s in some parts. In Yakima, Sunday’s temperature reached 104 degrees.

Summertime thunderstorms in the Northwest occur when moisture and unstable air masses come together, said Jay Neher, of the National Weather Service.

“They don’t make it into Seattle very often, though they are very common over the mountains,” he said.  If Seattle gets four thunderstorms in a summer, there will be triple that number in the mountains, he said.

About 0.06 of an inch of rain was reported at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport between midnight and 1 a.m. There was a report of lightning at Boeing Field, he said.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that lightning caused two house fires in Selah, north of Yakima. Strong winds also downed power lines, caused pole fires and power outages in the Yakima Valley. The 104 temperature there broke the 1985, 100 degree high for that day.
