Tukwila man dies after he’s taken into custody by police

An investigation is underway into the death of a man Saturday after he was taken into custody by Tukwila police.

According to Tukwila police, officers responded to a 911 call from the residents of a house in the 5600 block of South 152nd Place. They said a 26-year-old man “with a history of mental illness” was being combative with his family and making strange statements to the 911 operator, police said.

When officers arrived the man was holding a golf club and threatening his family, police said.

According to police, the man suffered a broken ankle when he tried to escape from the officers as they were taking him into custody for an involuntary mental-health commitment.

An ambulance and a Fire Department aid crew were summoned to treat the ankle injury and to transport the man to the hospital. While in the ambulance, the man began to have trouble breathing, police said.

He was taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, where he later died. The cause of death is not known.

Detectives from the Valley Investigative Team are investigating the death.
