Waste Management bosses picking up hospital waste as strike continues

Teamsters Local 117 drivers blocked entrances to the Waste Management facilities yard at 8111 First Ave. S. this morning, but day two of the local garbage strike was relatively quiet.

This morning district managers drove the green trucks off the lot to dump garbage left in the trucks Wednesday when drivers walked off the job at 10 a.m. The managers also drove the trucks to pick up waste at hospitals — considered essential service sites — with only minor resistance from strikers.

Some 153 drivers who pick up recycling and yard-waste materials are on strike over wages and other issues but the garbage haulers, who are represented by another union, walked off the job in support of the strike. The union is expected to offer an update this afternoon.

About 220,000 homes are affected in King and South Snohomish counties, and collections were not expected.
