Defendant in Montesano courthouse attack ruled competent

The Associated Press

ABERDEEN – The man accused of stabbing a judge and shooting a sheriff’s deputy at the Grays Harbor County Courthouse has been found mentally competent to stand trial.

A Lewis County judge ruled Wednesday that 34-year-old Steven D. Kravetz of McCleary can be tried on attempted murder and assault charges. His lawyer, David Arcuri, argued that Kravetz couldn’t focus on his own defense. He had two mental evaluations.

Kravetz is held on $900,000 bail for arraignment Sept. 7 in Lewis County Superior Court.

The Daily World reports the violent confrontation last March in Montesano occurred when Kravetz went to the courthouse in an attempt to steal court files related to a 2005 case. In that case doctors attempted to use a catheter on him to get urine for a drug test.
