Fire relief workers need donations of money, but not stuff

Relief workers helping people evacuated due to the Taylor Bridge Fire in Central Washington have been overwhelmed by donations of clothes and food, they say, and they don’t want any more. Instead, people are urged to donate money.

Workers have warehouse space and are sorting donations, but “definitely right now we do not need anymore clothes,” said Linda Schactler, Central Washington University public affairs director.

The public outpouring has been amazing,  said Brittany Steward, general manager of the Holiday Inn Express in Ellensburg who has been helping coordinate donations.

“At this point, we are amazed to say, we don’t have any needs as of today. We have gotten semi-loads, and I am not joking,” she said.

In the meantime, financial donations to help families with temporary housing and other needs can be made to the Red Cross or United Way of Central Washington.
