A man who drowned while retrieving a ball in Lake Washington at Kirkland’s Denny Park on Wednesday night has been identified as 54-year-old David Ulm, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.
His death was ruled an accident.
A bystander and Ulm’s wife attempted to save Ulm, but they had to be rescued themselves, according to the Kirkland Fire and Police departments.
The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Wednesday when Ulm was helping to retrieve a ball for someone. While he was able to reach the ball, he began to struggle in the water, according to Kirkland police.
Kirkland Fire and Rescue divers arrived on scene first and were able to rescue the wife and bystander, but not the man. Mercer Island Marine Divers later located his body and retrieved it. King County Marine and Seattle Marine Patrol also responded to provide assistance in the rescue.
