A Lynnwood police officer has been hospitalized in serious condition after plunging down an 18-foot embankment Sunday during a struggle with a wanted man, police said.
The officer, Ryan Hoirup, was chasing a man wanted on warrants in the 3000 block of 196th Street Southwest around 5:15 p.m. When Hoirup caught up with the suspect, the man struggled with the officer and both men tumbled down an embankment and into a gully, police said.
The suspect suffered a broken wrist, but was able to run into woods. He was later captured.
The Lynnwood Fire Department pulled the injured officer from the bottom of the ravine and transported him to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.
Hoirup, 28, was hired by the Lynnwood Police Department in 2007. He is married with a new baby, police said.
The suspect, 29, was wanted on multiple felony and misdemeanor warrants. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
