Police shoot hostage-taker at Pierce County credit union

Police today shot a man who was holding a woman hostage inside a credit union in the Pierce County community of Lakewood,  south of Tacoma.

No one else was harmed, said  Lt. Jeff Alwine, of the Lakewood Police Department. The man and woman were involved in some kind of domestic dispute, he added.  “There is no indication it was any kind of a robbery.”

Police offers arrived at the Washington State Employees Credit Union shortly past noon, after receiving reports of a man inside the bank with a gun.  Several people were inside the branch, at 9540 Bridgeport Way Southwest. A tense, 50-minute standoff followed.

A SWAT team was just setting up when the suspect appeared in a glass foyer with a handgun and the hostage, Alwine said.  Two officers already at the scene fired when they had a clear shot, and hit the suspect at least once.

The man was rushed to an area hospital. His condition wasn’t immediately known.

Police were interviewing the people who were inside the credit union,  including the woman held hostage, Alwine said.
