Suspect arrested in South Seattle jewelry heists

A 19-year-old man suspected of snatching jewelry during a recent spree of street robberies in South Seattle has been arrested, police said.

Detectives, investigating more than 20 purse- and necklace-snatchings since Aug. 14, put the word out they were looking for the man, police said. He turned himself in to police on Friday

Detectives are still looking for suspects in several other robberies.

Police said the robberies happened in just over a week and targeted people on streets,  bus stops, grocery stores and shopping centers on Beacon Hill and in the Rainier Valley.

The robberies happen quickly, with the suspects either grabbing their victims from behind or walking up to their victims, asking them a question, and snatching jewelry and purses from them, police said

Detectives believe the spate of street robberies began Aug. 14, when two males  followed a woman out of a market on Beacon Hill and ripped two gold and jade necklaces from around her neck.

“It’s purely a crime of opportunity,” says robbery Lt.  Dan Whelan.
