A woman in her late teens or early 20s was killed in Spanaway this morning after a pickup truck loaded with young adults crashed into a chain-link fence and trees. Pierce County sheriff’s investigators say alcohol was involved.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was one of seven people riding in a half-ton pickup, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Mike Blair. Deputies found empty beer cans in the vehicle, Blair added.
Deputies were called to the 20300 block of 22nd Avenue East about 5:45 a.m. after reports of the crash. Blair said it appears the truck was speeding when the driver lost control. The vehicle crashed through the trees and fence and rolled over at least twice before coming to a stop in the residential neighborhood, Blair said.
Six young adults, ages 19 to 22, were hospitalized, Blair said. Three people were in the cab; the four others were riding in the truck bed.
Blair said the road is closed while deputies investigate.
