Driver’s license fees going up Oct. 1

The cost of getting or renewing a driver’s license in our state is going up Oct. 1, so be prepared.

The license renewal cost will increase from $25 to $45. The cost of getting a new license will be even more expensive. You’ll have to fork over $80 for that. The application fee is $35, and the license costs $45.

The increase is the result of measures passed earlier this year by the Legislature. Some of the functions that have been handled by the state licensing folks — such as written and driving exams — are going to be taken over by private outfits over time. As part of the transition, for example, written and driving skills tests will no longer be offered at the Licensing Department’s offices in West Seattle and Kent beginning October 1.

It’s all part of an effort to make the whole licensing process more convenient, the state says.

Here are some of the numbers. (A complete list can be found here.)
