Fire evacuees allowed to return home in Klickitat County

The Associated Press

WHITE SALMON, Klickitat County – Residents of nearly 50 homes who were forced to evacuate by a wildfire in the Columbia River Gorge have been allowed to return home as fire crews make progress against the Highway 141 fire.

By Friday evening, fire spokeswoman Mary Bean said, more than 600 firefighters were working to build and strengthen lines around the fire. The fire is 40 percent contained. Full containment is expected by next Thursday.

Bean says the blaze that started Wednesday north of White Salmon has burned across more than 2 square miles, or nearly 1,500 acres.
