A small fire caused by a classroom light prompted the complete evacuation of Cascade Elementary in Marysville on the first day of the school year, according to the Marysville School District.
All students and staff were evacuated safely around noon as the Marysville Fire Department quickly put the fire out, according to a district release. Students were able to return to classes in learning spaces outside of the affected building later in the day.
Six classrooms, including three for kindergarten students, were damaged by the fire or smoke that spread through the ventilation system. Two will be reopened after cleaning in the next couple days, but the district said it didn’t know how long it would take to repair four classrooms with the most extensive damage.
The three kindergarten classrooms will be temporarily relocated at Mountain View Presbyterian Church across the street from the elementary school.
Students were unable to reclaim their belongings from the classrooms after the fire, but the district said they will be returned as soon as the rooms can be cleaned. In the meantime, Cascade Elementary is accepting donations of general school supplies.
