Inmates injure 3 corrections officers at Coyote Ridge

Three corrections officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries this afternoon following an attack by two inmates at the Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, according to the state Department of Corrections.

At about 1 p.m., inmate Schawn James Cruze lunged at a corrections officer with a broomstick, the DOC said in a news release. Two other corrections officers responded and were assaulted by another inmate, David Kopp.

The corrections officers were able to bring the two inmates under control, but suffered minor injuries in the process. The inmates were not injured, the DOC said.

The living unit where the incident occurred is currently under lockdown. Police in Connell, Franklin County, are investigating.

The DOC says Cruze, 39, is serving a life sentence under the state’s Three Strikes law for assault, drug possession and unlawful possession of a firearm out of Clark County.

Kopp, 23, was convicted of second-degree murder in Snohomish County. His earliest release date is September 2027.
