The Snohomish County medical examiner is investigating the cause of death of a 60-year-old man who died at the Snohomish County Jail. The man was taken into custody Friday around 9:30 p.m. by Everett police for alleged shoplifting of merchandise at a gas station and convenience store in the 3000 block of Broadway. He was transported to the jail.
The man did not resist the officers who took him into custody, said Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell. But in a booking area at the jail, he became combative and resisted jail staff. Correctional officers used a Taser to subdue him.
The man, who has not been identified, was put into an isolation room. During a routine check, jail staff noticed he was in distress and performed CPR. Everett Fire assisted, but could not revive the man.
Snell said he didn’t know how long after the Tasing the man from Concrete began having medical problems, and it’s unclear whether the electric jolt had any connection with his death.
The death is being investigated by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response team, as is routine when someone dies in police custody, Snell added.
