Man who died at Snohomish County Jail identified

The 59-year-old man who died after being stunned with a Taser Friday night at the Snohomish County Jail has been identified as William C. Williams of Everett.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed Wednesday that a corrections deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation into Williams’ death.

Police said Williams resisted jail officers after being arrested for investigation of shoplifting at a gas station Friday night. They used a Taser on him twice, but it had little effect on him, police said. Williams was then placed in isolation.

During a check on Williams at about 10:30 p.m. jail staff noticed he was distressed and performed CPR, but he died.

It isn’t clear if the Taser use contributed to the man’s death. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine cause of death.
