A 23-year-old woman standing outside her van on the Interstate 5 in Arlington was struck and killed by another vehicle early Tuesday morning, according to Washington State Patrol. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Tara Raelene Olson of Marysville.
Before she was hit, Olson had rear-ended a Chevrolet pickup on 236 Street Northeast in Arlington, and then, after stopping, left the scene, according to State Patrol spokesman Keith Leary. She then pulled over onto the right shoulder of the southbound Interstate 5 less than a mile from the earlier collision.
A man driving a 1994 Toyota Celica in the freeway’s center lane just after midnight said he struck something, but didn’t know what it was until he stopped and searched. The man found no one at Olson’s van and then, along with the two people Olson had previously rear-ended, searched for her. She had landed near the freeway’s left shoulder.
Leary said State Patrol is still investigating why Olson may have run out into the middle of the road.
