Morning Memo/Friday: Kent fire kills 2 … Ride-free zone ends … Horses rescued

Weather: It could reach 70 degrees today, but it could be cloudy. Scratch that. There will be sun, we’re sure. The weekend is expected to be cooler, in the low to mid 60s. But by next Tuesday, we could hit the 70s again. Go figure. The good news is that it’s been a long time since we’ve had real rain and that’s very cool.  The National Weather Service forecast.

Traffic: The map and cams.

House fire kills two near Kent: Two people are dead after neighbors heard an explosion at a home near Kent. Two people escaped, but two men were caught inside.

The free-ride bus service in the city’s core ends today, after which it’ll cost you $2.25. KING5 says there will be protests today.

Prosecutors in the Tri-Cities said Todd D. Stuart tried to kill his mother-in-law by dropping a bin on her from the rafters of a garage. The jury said the state didn’t prove its case and acquitted him. But Stuart’s wife goes on trial in three weeks, accused of shooting her mother dead. It’s complicated. The Tri-City Herald has the story.

Thirty-nine horses living in squalid conditions are rescued. The horses, many of them Arabians, were found at a ranch in Graham, Pierce County, according to The News Tribune in Tacoma. We wonder why anyone lets this happen. Pierce County officials say the best way to help would be through donations to cover costs that could reach $40,000.
