Morning Memo/Thursday: End of line for free bus rides … New wildfire … Dead hiker ID’d

Weather: Sunny and warm today and tomorrow. Yes! A bit cooler on the weekend, but we’ll take that, too. It’s just that Monday and Tuesday will see even cooler temps, as in the mid-60s. Does that mean fall is here? Dang. The National Weather Service forecast.

Traffic: The map and cams.

No freebie to ride the bus downtown: We’ve said it many times before, but the free bus rides you’ve enjoyed in downtown Seattle — since 1973 — come to an end Sept 29. Metro says it will save $2 million by ending the free service, and people needing to get to social services will still be able to ride for free. Still, since 1973 …

Bears on the move: The Yakima Bears baseball team played its last game in Yakima yesterday, suffering a 3-2 loss to Boise. The owners of the Northwest League team got a better offer to play in Hillsboro, Ore., and they took it. Even though the club has lost money each of the past 10 years, it’s always sad to see a franchise leave town. Does that ring a bell, Seattle?

Wildfire near White Salmon: We’re keeping an eye on the fire near White Salmon that has threatened some 30 homes so far.

Hiker found dead is identified: The man who died while hiking with his brother near Merchant Peak in Snohomish County over the weekend has been identified as 30-year-old Randall Stupey of Everett, according to myeverettnews. Randall Stupey’s brother called authorities after the two got separated and his brother didn’t turn up.
