UPDATE 12:18 p.m.: The Fourth Avenue South Bridge has reopened. Seattle police are still investigating this morning’s multiple-vehicle crash.

The Fourth Avenue South Bridge is closed to traffic after several cars collided. Detours are in place.

Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson said several vehicles crashed at about 7:46 a.m., apparently caused by a 55-year-old wrong-way driver in the southbound lanes.  The tangle apparently caused an oil spill in the roadway.

It took Seattle firefighters 15 minutes to get the 55-year-old driver out of his vehicle. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with head trauma, said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

No one else received medical treatment, Moore said.

Drugs or alcohol might be a factor,  Jamieson said.

Anyone traveling in the area this morning should expect delays, police said. Traffic has been diverted onto Sixth Avenue South.
