Pedestrian struck by Seattle police cruiser

UPDATE: Police say the woman was struck by the car’s driver-side mirror. She sustained minor injuries, according to police.

A woman walking across Martin Luther King Jr. Way South was struck late Friday by a  Seattle police cruiser as the officer was responding to a domestic violence call, the police department said.

The officer was driving a fully-marked police car and had activated its emergency lights and siren when the accident happened about 11:51 p.m.  The officer was driving south on MLK Jr. Way South.  The woman was crossing the street from east to west at or near the intersection with South Willow Street when the officer hit her, the department said.

It’s not known how fast the officer was driving. After his car struck the woman, the officer, not identified, lost control of his cruiser and struck a light pole south of the intersection.

Seattle Fire medics took the woman, in her mid-30′s, to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, the department reported.  The officer, a male in his 30′s, did not sustain obvious injury but was transported to Harborview as well for evaluation.

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are investigating.  All lanes of southbound MLK Jr. Way South were shut down for about two hours while detectives investigated the accident.
