An increased demand for type O negative blood in the past 10 days has created a significant shortage in this area, and the Puget Sound Blood Center is asking for your help.
The blood center says it has seen a 15 percent spike in the need for type O negative blood at area hospitals in the past week.
The center is urging people to make donations over the next two weeks to replenish supplies.
Type O negative blood is considered the universal blood type. It can be given to all trauma patients when there is no time to determine their blood types, according to the blood center.
The center also notes that it takes more than 900 donor registrations every day to maintain the needed blood supply in Western Washington.
If you’re willing to donate, you can schedule an appointment by calling 800-398-7888. Walk-ins are also welcome. Visit www.psbc.org for donation center hours of operation and driving directions.
