Seattle police: Man tries to torch car with driver inside

Seattle police are looking for a man who tried to torch a car while the driver was seated inside Tuesday in the University District.

The incident happened around 3:45 p.m. in an alley behind the victim’s home near Northeast 47th Street and 15th Avenue Northeast. The victim was sitting in his car when a man walked up behind the vehicle, pulled out a can of lighter fluid and sprayed it on the back of the vehicle, police said.

The man then lit a match and tossed it on the car. Fortunately, the lighter fluid didn’t ignite.

The victim got out of his car and confronted the firebug, who mumbled something about a “barbecue” and walked away, police said.

The victim called 911, but police weren’t able to find the would-be arsonist.
