Suspect in slaying of Burlington man arrested in California

The man suspected of killing an 18-year-old Skagit County man and burying his bullet-riddled body in a shallow grave in Snohomish County has been arrested in Oxnard, Calif.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect, Edgar Alejandre, 20, was arrested Monday by the U.S. Marshals Service for investigation of second-degree murder.

The victim, Fernando Mendoza, of Burlington, was reportedly going to meet Alejandre on July 2 to discuss a debt the suspect owed Mendoza, the Sheriff’s Office said. Mendoza was never heard from again.

Family members reported Mendoza missing on July 3.

Mendoza’s body was discovered on Sept. 3 near the 16000 block of Dubuque Road in the Machias area of Snohomish County.
