Toddler drowns in Spanaway Lake

A 21-month-old boy drowned in Spanaway Lake Tuesday evening, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The toddler had ventured from his lakeside home on the 17100 block of 6th Avenue Court South before falling in the lake, according to department spokesman Ed Troyer. The boy’s 9-year-old brother found him and called for the help of neighbors and family who tried to resuscitate him.

When deputies arrived around 7:15 p.m.,  they also helped administer CPR until medical personnel transported him to St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, where the boy died about an hour later.

The sheriff’s department did not release information about whether any barriers exist between the house and the lake.
