Victim of Edmonds apartment-complex fire identified

A man who died in an Edmonds apartment-complex fire Wednesday has been identified as 52-year-old Andrew Duncan Oates by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fire investigators believe Oates fell asleep while smoking a cigarette, which ended up igniting the blaze at the complex in the 23300 block of Edmonds Way, according to Snohomish County Fire District 1. Everyone else in the 12-unit apartment building was able to escape without injuries.

Smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
