Victim of Everett beating, robbery dies; cause unknown

A 91-year-old man who was beaten and robbed Aug. 24 in Everett  has died, according to Everett police.

Police say it is unknown whether the man’s death on Thursday was the result of the beating or of natural causes. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The man’s name has not been released, but media reports have identified him as Harold Caywood, of Everett

If it’s determined that Caywood’s death was directly related to the beating, the man arrested in the incident could face a homicide charge.

According to police, Caywood was robbed and beaten at an Arco service station at 9931 19th Ave. S.E.  The suspect, Patrick Hartness, 26, of Everett, was arrested  nearby. Hartness has been charged with first-degree robbery.

Everett police now believe Hartness may be responsible for several recent Snohomish County burglaries that targeted elderly victims.
