Bellevue smartphone thief wasn’t too smart

A man suspected of stealing 15 smartphones and cash from a Bellevue Radio Shack last night didn’t exactly plan out a foolproof escape.

Police arrested the suspected armed robber within a half-hour of the robbery.

According to Bellevue police, the man walked into the store in the 1300 block of 156th Avenue Northeast just before 6 p.m., pulled out a handgun and took $284 in cash and approximately 15 smartphones.

Police broadcast a description of the suspect. A man matching the description was spotted on a King County Metro bus at 148th and Northeast 8th Street, police said. The bus was stopped and the man was detained.

During a search a handgun was found on the man, police said. The money and the stolen smartphones were recovered from the suspect’s backpack, they said.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of first-degree robbery.
