UPDATE: Fire blackens 58-foot ship berthed in Seattle

A 4 a.m. fire Friday that heavily damaged a 58-foot fishing boat at Fishermen’s Terminal is believed to have started at an electrical outlet in the boat’s galley.

No one was aboard the Sierra Mar at the time of the fire, which was called in by a motorist who saw the fire while driving across the Ballard Bridge, said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

Flames were shooting 25 feet in the air when firefighters arrived, Moore said.  Fire crews used foam to control the blaze in four minutes, keeping the fire from spreading to any nearby vessels at the Port of Seattle facility.

Moore said it was not immediately known whether the outlet malfunctioned or was being used improperly. He said investigators were talking to the boat’s owner, who arrived while the fire was being fought.

Damage was estimated at $100,000 to the boat and $100,000 to its contents, which included electronic equipment, Moore said.
