Man arrested after melee outside Seattle hotel

Seattle police arrested a 34-year-old man last night after a brawl that started when he asked for a cigarette in the  Chinatown International District.

Officers were called to the American Hotel, 520 S. King St., at 9:20 on a report of a fight in progress. When officers arrived they saw 12 people brawling around the corner from the hotel and a man clinging to the side of a wheelchair, said police spokeswoman Renee Witt.

The 34-year-old suspect attacked two people, including the man in the wheelchair, because they would not give him a cigarette. Bystanders got quickly involved and police were called. The two main victims were hospitalized, Witt added.

The 34-year-old man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of felony assault.
