Pacific Science Center wins national award

Seattle’s Pacific Science Center on Monday was named one of 10 recipients of this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

The award was announced by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, primary source of federal support for 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.

Susan Hildreth, institute director, said the organizations honored “build strong communities and provide opportunities for individual success.”

The Pacific Science Center, which recently celebrated its 50th birthday, is run by a private nonprofit foundation in the facility that was the U.S. Science Pavilion in the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. It reaches more that 1.3 million people a year at its Seattle Center campus and in communities across the state.

The institute’s awards will be formally presented in Washington, D.C., Nov. 14.
